Abstract

Although gamification in education has been extensively studied, most of the studies published to date are primarily concerned with the short-lived nature of student engagement, lack adequate real-world empirical validation, and/ or do not incorporate artificial intelligence (AI). In this study, we introduce an AI-driven gamification model aimed at increasing long-term educational engagement through the utilization of personalized learning pathways, adaptive difficulty levels, immediate feedback, and reinforcement learning algorithms. In contrast to previous work that centers on educator perceptions or a narrow number of gamifications artifacts this study takes a holistic view which integrates student and trainer opinion and uses AI-supported gamification mechanisms across multiple educational contexts: K-12, higher education and corporate training. The proposed framework seeks to minimize the divide between theoretical constructs and practical application by sustaining student’s engagement with the tools from these constructs over a long period of time and achieving improved student learning. A new AI-based engagement analytics system is also included in the study to evaluate engagement dynamics for gamification techniques and to provide evidence of any motivational impact on students. Successful long-term retention of knowledge and academic performance has been the focus of this new AI framework for educational gamification.
