Abstract

There is growing concern about energy consumption, scalability, and environmental sustainability with the rising demand for artificial intelligence (AI) in digital communications, resource management, and technological innovations. Prior works primarily offer theoretical models, a lack of standardized benchmarking to measure sustainability and do not consider the entire life-cycle environmental impact of the system. Few studies provide novel frameworks for energy-aware AI; thus, this study illustrates a new paradigm: (1) lightweight architectures for AI that meet carbon accounting methodologies and regulatory policies; and (2) scalable, resource-efficient, and carbon-neutral AI solutions. This study aims to construct a holistic roadmap for sustainable AI development, by harnessing edge AI, renewable-powered computation and novel green computing technologies. It also highlights the need for ESG metrics for AI and shares examples of real-world applications for low footprint scalable digital interactions and resource-efficient computing. Furthermore, it seeks to join the wider world effort to reduce the environmental impact of AI while preserving efficiency and innovation around AI-powered technology.
