- Abstract
In many cities, public transportation is a lifeline for residents, providing an affordable and accessible means of travel. However, inefficiencies such as lack of real-time tracking, unclear seat availability, and insufficient route information often deter passengers from using government buses. These shortcomings lead to inconveniences like extended waiting times, overcrowded buses, and uncertainty regarding travel plans, ultimately decreasing public confidence in the system.
To address these challenges, we propose a GPS-based tracking system that enhances the passenger experience by providing real-time bus tracking, seat availability updates, and comprehensive route information. Seat availability detection is achieved using YOLO (YOLOv5), a state-of-the-art object detection algorithm that accurately identifies and tracks occupied and empty seats in real time using cameras installed in buses and additional this system sends the push notification to the passenger’s with the application installed, and who are within a specified geofence, receive notifications indicating the bus arrival. The system uses geofencing APIs to monitor user locations, while the bus transmits its real time GPS coordinates to a backend server. The backend processes this data to identify users within the geofence and triggers push notifications using services like firebase cloud messaging. This system aims to improve operational efficiency, location aware notification, ensure passenger safety, and promote the use of public transportation by offering clarity convenience and smart city initiatives.
