- Abstract
Bhortal Nritya, originating in Assam’s Barpeta district, is an energetic collective folk dance with deep roots in the region’s Vaishnavite spiritual and pedagogical traditions. Performed in groups with large brass cymbals and marked by synchronized movements and devotional intent, Bhortal Nritya exemplifies the integration of art, discipline, and community identity. This paper critically examines Bhortal Nritya through ethnographic observation, textual analysis, and comparative perspectives on indigenous pedagogies. The research aims to establish the enduring educational value of Bhortal Nritya, not only as an intangible cultural heritage but as a living model for participatory, values-driven learning relevant to modern pedagogy and social innovation. Recommendations are provided for sustainable transmission and curricular adaptation, advocating a balanced approach that honors lineage, local authority, and the need to revitalize traditional knowledge for a broader societal context.
