- Abstract
Laws like the Sex Discrimination Ordinance coenacted as a mechanism of promoting equality cannot overcome entrenched social traditions effectively in Hong Kong. This paper considers how social norms within Hong Kong influence gender equality within the workplace based on three key areas, including traditional roles and how they persist within professional environments; quantifiable results and how they influence one's advancement and interactions within the workplace, as well as remedies on how to address such impediments. It relies on academic research, governmental reports, and case studies. The paper seeks to contribute to what has been discussed about gender equality within Hong Kong and provides practical recommendations on what policymakers as well as owners of businesses can improve the situation for female employees. This research argues that social conventions within Hong Kong persistently influence gender dynamics within the workplace on a large scale. Further research could further examine how these gender relations intersect with race, class, disablement, and homosexuality for progress to become more inclusive at workplace.
