- Abstract
In the age of digitalization, images of celebrities have become important tools of soft power. This paper explores the design and the use of celebrity images, focusing on politics, history, and culture in China, the US, and South Korea. State-sponsored cultural nationalists and revivalists in China claim, “celebrity is the symbol of Chinese culture.” South Korea practices synthesis by merging modern idolization with traditional culture; thus, these idols are culture-bearing communicators. In the US these individuals are the champions and embodiments of individualism, diversity, and multicentricity. This study provides insights that enhance understanding of how area of local identity and transnational identity are mediated by disparate nationalizations of these images. As a whole, this case study illustrates the functions of contemporary celebrity culture where the cross-Cultural negotiation takes place which acts both as a mirror or a reflection of negotiation and as a facilitator of culture.
