- Abstract
Internet addiction (IAD) is one of the key research topics in society, some researchers discovered there were many impacts of IAD in adolescents, but of which exact influence does IAD cause is still not clear. Thus, this study focused on the impact of IAD on self-esteem (SE) and academic performance (AP), and used literature review to investigate the correlation and causality inside. The study included literature from different scientists in different countries, concluded their results and critically analyzed their findings. The results showed that IAD is negatively correlated with SE and AP, and can predict lower SE and AP. In addition, IAD is different from general internet use, which cannot influence SE and AP negatively. Moreover, males are easier effected by IAD than females. To reduce the harm of IAD, parents can form a pleasure relationship with children and help them establish a reasonable internet use habit. Furthermore, adolescents need to cultivate more outdoor activities and make healthy interpersonal relationships in real life. Being more devoted into academic works can also help the teenagers to be more controllable on using the internet.
