- Abstract
Avoidant Personality Disorder is a serious mental health problem that disrupts the lives of affected individuals. The present study synthesizes recent research to provide a detailed analysis of the diagnostic criteria, etiology, socio-psychological impacts, and treatment approaches for the disorder. By reviewing peer-review studies from 2010 to 2024, this study identifies the interaction of genetic factors, childhood experiences, and maladaptive cognitive patterns as key contributors to the development of AVPD symptoms. It is a condition that strongly impacts interpersonal relations, professional growth, and mental health; it most often is linked with comorbidity of anxiety disorders, major depression, and substance-related disorders. Cognitive-behavioral therapy, Schema Therapy, and Social Skills Trainings are amongst the interventions powerful in alleviating symptoms and also improving the quality of life. However, it is worth noting that challenges pertaining to treatment access remain. Early diagnosis, culturally sensitive interventions, and further research into the neurobiological mechanisms of the disorder significantly improve patient outcomes.
