Abstract

The nickel industry plays a strategic role in supporting economic growth and the global energy transition, particularly through the development of electric vehicle battery technology. Competition among nickel-exporting countries has become increasingly intense as global demand for this commodity continuous to rise. This study aims to analyze the competitiveness of the nickel industry in the world’s top five exporting countries namely Indonesia, the Philippines, Russia, New Caledonia, and Australia over the period from 2003 to 2023. The research employs a quantitative approach, using the Revealed Comparative Ad- vantage (RCA) indicator to measure the competitiveness level of each country. In addition, a panel data regression analysis is conducted to examine the effect of export volume and exchange rates on nickel competitiveness. The results of the RCA analysis indicate that Indonesia demonstrates relatively high competitive-ness compared to the other countries during the analyzed period. Meanwhile, the panel regression results reveal that export volume has a significant impact on competitiveness, whereas the exchange rate does not have a statistically significant effect. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for formulating policies that support the strengthening of Indonesia’s competitive position in the global nickel industry.
