Abstract

To explore the influence of family background on national identity and entrepreneurial intentions among youth in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and to uncover the underlying mechanisms, this study employed a random questionnaire survey targeting young people aged 18–35 in the GBA. A total of 2,151 valid responses were collected. Through multiple regression analysis, the findings reveal the following: (1) Youth in the GBA exhibit relatively high entrepreneurial intentions, and family background significantly influences these intentions. Specifically, family location, family entrepreneurial atmosphere, family economic status, and family cultural atmosphere all exert positive effects on entrepreneurial intentions. (2) Multiple dimensions of family background, such as family location and family entrepreneurial atmosphere, significantly impact youth’s sense of national identity. (3) National identity partially mediates the relationship between family background and entrepreneurial intentions, indicating that youth with stronger national identity are more likely to exhibit higher entrepreneurial intentions. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism through which family background influences entrepreneurial intentions via national identity. The results offer valuable theoretical insights and practical recommendations for enhancing entrepreneurial intentions among GBA youth, fostering regional economic development, and strengthening national identity through targeted policies and educational interventions.
