Abstract

A national park’s network attention reflects its development, interest and potential demand. This paper uses the 2017–2023 Baidu Search Index to investigate the network attention of China’s first five national parks. To achieve this, the study employs index analysis, spatial visualisation, and geo-detectors.The findings are as follows: (1) Since their creation, national parks have attracted attention. Following the establishment of the national parks, attention was highest for Sanjiangyuan, Northeast Tiger Leopard, Giant Panda, Hainan Tropical Rainforest and Wuyishan National Park. January, February and October saw the most attention. Weekdays saw the highest average daily network attention, followed by weekends and holidays. (2) Spatial characteristics: The network attention of the five national parks does not fully follow the ‘distance attenuation law’, but is consistent with the ‘economic attenuation law’ and the ‘east-central-west’ gradient. Beijing has shown a high level of attention to all five national parks. (3) The geodetector q-value shows the five national parks are influenced by holidays and economic development, with holidays being the main factor. Detection factors like transport, tourism, population, education and the ecological environment have less impact.
