- Abstract
Based on panel data from 281 cities in China, this study empirically analyzes the impact of digital development on urban consumption expansion. The research reveals that digital development significantly promotes urban consumption expansion, a conclusion that holds even after dimensional and robustness tests; regional heterogeneity analysis indicates that digital development has a significant promotional effect on consumption expansion in eastern and central cities, but the promotional effect on western cities is not significant; digital development drives urban consumption expansion by enhancing residents’ consumption capacity and willingness; digital development has a significant positive spatial spillover effect on urban consumption expansion. In light of this, policy recommendations include accelerating comprehensive urban digital development, implementing policies to expedite digital development in western cities, enhancing the promotional effects of digital development on residents’ consumption capacity and willingness, and leveraging the spatial spillover effects of digital development on urban consumption expansion.
