Abstract

This study explores the integration of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) with sustainable development goals (SDGs) in the digital era as a pathway to sustainable business growth, particularly among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the rendang sector in West Sumatra, Indonesia. EO, which includes innovation, proactivity and risk-taking, plays a crucial role in helping firms adapt to market changes and achieve sustainability. This study used a qualitative approach, combining interviews, observations and document analysis from six SMEs in Padang and Payakumbuh. The results show that the use of EO is significantly influenced by the demographic characteristics of business owners, such as education level and age, as well as the support provided by the business ecosystem. Business owners with higher levels of education were found to be more proactive in adopting innovative strategies and digital technologies that contribute to achieving the SDGs. Digitalization, through the use of e-commerce and other online platforms, was found to increase market reach and operational efficiency. However, limited digital literacy and educational backgrounds have been a barrier for some SMEs to realize their full potential. In addition, the supportive role of communities and cooperatives, such as the Iko Sero cooperative, was found to be crucial in enhancing SMEs’ innovative capacity and resilience. The study concludes that the integration of EO with the SDGs requires targeted support from entrepreneurial ecosystems, educational initiatives and advances in digital technology. The findings highlight the need for policies that enhance entrepreneurship education and digital literacy, to help SMEs better adapt and thrive in the digital age. Future research is recommended to cover a wider range of sectors and to use quantitative methods to better understand the relationship between demographic characteristics, ecosystem support and sustainable businesses.
