Abstract

Learning in an educational setting is hindered greatly by distractions, which have a dramatic effect on a student’s success and participation in educational institutions. In this study, we categorized classroom distractions into six main types, e.g., auditory, visual, digital, external, behavioral, and cognitive; and evaluated the extent to which each interferes with student concentration and learning. We assessed how much each distraction can potentially interfere with concentration and hinder learning to determine the potential for emerging technology, such as artificial intelligence, to identify, minimize, and/or eliminate such distractions before they can disrupt the learning process. AI-powered solutions and smart classroom technologies offer the potential to detect and mitigate distractions in real-time, thereby creating an environment conducive to uninterrupted learning. The purpose of this study is to provide educators, researchers, and technology specialists with an understanding of the complex nature of distractions and their urgent need for innovative solutions to maintain students’ focus while they are learning in the classroom.
