- Abstract
Materiality is the most powerful tool in the hands of a designer. It most often determines the abstract concept of the design outcome as well as the tangible presence of what is created by a designer for the purpose of people.
The paper below aims to put the spot light on a material, Stainless Steel, that needs to be given its correct space in the creative fabric of Indian design. A material that is often unexplored aesthetically. A material that has immense value in the concept of circular economy and sustainability. The exploration of the juxtaposition of materials that are rooted in the culture and sensibility India, and the narrative of stainless steel being a material that speaks of advancement in technology born from precision, is the core of this article.
Written in an essay format for to attempt a broader outreach, specially focussed on the young creative mind, this paper is limited to exploring some key ideas on ground making it more tactile and tangible in its approach and taking it out of a realm of pure academia. It is all about the ways to see materials and innovation with a highlight to the idea of “’Critical Regionalism’.”
The context of the writing is focused on India and the basis of design thinking focus is local, however the methodology and the reference is from international inspirations where explorations have been far and wide.
