- Abstract
Stainless Steel is one of the few materials in architecture which possess a wide range of properties such as corrosion resistance, durability, variety in terms of grades and finishes. This paper tries to present a comprehensive analysis of use of stainless steel in architecture. We use research on material science of stainless steel, grade selection frameworks, case studies, sustainability measures and life-cycle cost evaluations to critically examine the suitability of its use. This paper throws light on the aesthetics, hygiene, durability and sustainability aspects of stainless steel. At last, we demonstrate a multi-criteria framework that integrates life-cycle cost, embodied carbon, aesthetics, and PREN values to act as a guide in selection of grade for specific applications.
