- Abstract
Parental phubbing is a new phenomenon describing parents’ behavior of focusing more on smartphones rather than interacting with their children. Although there are studies discussing parental phubbing and its impact on adolescents, available literature is still limited, especially in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the role of self-control and parent-child attachment as mediators in the relationship between parental phubbing and academic burnout. The study participants consisted of 323 adolescents aged 12–16 years, living with parents who own smartphones. Data were collected through an online questionnaire using adapted scales for parental phubbing, academic burnout, self-control, and parent-child attachment. Results showed that self-control (0.198) and parent-child attachment (0.132) significantly mediated the relationship between parental phubbing and academic burnout. Parental phubbing was negatively related to self-control (-0.703) and parent-child attachment (-0.596), which in turn, self-control (-0.282) and parent-child attachment (-0.221) were negatively related to academic burnout. These findings reveal a complex mechanism whereby parents’ phubbing behavior can affect adolescents’ academic well-being through reduced self-control abilities and weakened parent-child bonds. This study provides new insights into the impact of technology on family dynamics and adolescent development in the Indonesian context, highlighting the importance of interventions to reduce the negative effects of parental phubbing.
