- Abstract
Indonesia, as an archipelagic country with the longest coastline in the world, has rich marine and fisheries potential. However, the development of a nickel smelter industry, such as in Bantaeng Regency, threatens vital coastal ecosystems, such as coral reefs and seagrass beds, as well as the livelihoods of coastal communities. This study analyzes how Tempo.co frames the impact of the nickel smelter on coastal communities in Bantaeng between 2022 and 2025 using Robert N. Entman’s framing analysis. The results show that Tempo.co highlights environmental pollution, ecosystem damage, and social impacts, with criticism of corporate and government non-compliance. The media promotes solutions in the form of better waste management, safe shipping regulations, and fair compensation for affected communities. This study shows how the media shapes public perceptions of environmental and social issues and the relationship between industrial development and the welfare of coastal communities.
