- Abstract
This study reveals that research on civil society and participation has entered a phase of maturity, with stable patterns of publication and consistent scholarly impact. Despite a slightly negative growth rate, the field demonstrates strong visibility through an average of more than eleven citations per article, indicating that existing works continue to shape academic discourse. Thematic diversity, ranging from democracy and local participation to sustainability and crisis response such as the COVID-19 pandemic, reflects the interdisciplinary and global relevance of this area of study. However, several limitations were identified. The overall level of international collaboration remains modest, with only one in five publications involving cross-border co-authorship, which restricts the exchange of global perspectives. The persistence of conceptual fragmentation—particularly in the varied use of terms such as participation, empowerment, and civil society—also hampers the synthesis of findings across disciplines. Moreover, the concentration of publications in journal articles without significant contributions from other formats such as books or conference proceedings reduces opportunities for broader dissemination of knowledge. In view of these findings, future research should prioritize building stronger international and interdisciplinary networks, ensuring that diverse perspectives are integrated into the study of participation and civil society. Emerging themes, such as digital participation, environmental governance, and local innovation in governance practices, should be further developed to address contemporary challenges. Furthermore, diversifying publication formats beyond journal articles would enhance both the academic and practical impact of the field, strengthening its contribution to inclusive and sustainable governance worldwide.
