- Abstract
Objective: This study examined the effects of bicycle taillight shape (circular vs. elongated) and lighting pattern (steady, flashing, dynamic) on nighttime conspicuity and their interaction. Methods: Thirty drivers rated six taillight conditions using a 100-mm visual analog scale (VAS). A Williams Latin square controlled order effects. Data were analyzed using a two-way repeated-measures ANOVA. Results: Significant main effects were found for shape, F(1, 29) = 13.17, p = 0.001, partial η2 = 0.312, and lighting pattern, F(1.54, 44.70) = 54.35, p < 0.001, partial η2 = 0.652, with flashing > dynamic > steady. No interaction effect was observed, F(2, 58) = 0.11, p = 0.896. Conclusion: Flashing enhances conspicuity through temporal modulation, while circular shapes enhance spatial intensity; their effects are independent.
