Abstract

The development of China’s traditional opera industry constitutes a dual imperative: it represents a critical mechanism for safeguarding a valuable intangible cultural heritage and a strategic lever for augmenting regional cultural soft power. Employing a mixed-methods approach combining expert consultation and systematic literature review, this study operationalizes key analytical dimensions for SWOT analysis and subsequently develops a comprehensive SWOT matrix. Grounded in cultural industry theory, the research advances a set of targeted development strategies tailored to the specific context of the Min opera sector. The study proposes maximizing the utilization of supportive government policies, harnessing the exemplary and catalytic role of state-owned professional troupes, and establishing collaborative platforms to facilitate knowledge transfer between state-designated ICH bearers and private performance ensembles. It also suggests revising eligibility criteria to enable private troupe performers to qualify for junior-level ICH inheritor designations, thereby mitigating the acute talent shortage. Furthermore, the study advocates for cultivating future Min opera audiences through integrated public cultural programming and school-based educational initiatives. Finally, to ensure the long-term sustainability of the industry ecosystem, it is imperative to innovate diverse Min opera offerings that resonate with the aesthetic sensibilities of contemporary youth demographics.
