- Abstract
Water infrastructure such as bridge piers and other water structures can inhibit and change the behavior of the surrounding flow, which varies in terms of velocity, flow pattern, angle of curvature and compressive forces on the piers. Bridge collapse due to stability failure of bridge piers is the most common cause. This study aims to simulate the flow around the bridge piers in sub-critical flow conditions by analyzing the flow characteristics and compressive force due to the flow pressure that occurs and knowing its effect on the bridge piers. This study simulates the flow around bridge piers under sub-critical conditions, using three types of pier cross-sections: rectangular, capsule, and air-foil-shaped. The results show that the water level, flow velocity, and flow pressure vary depending on the pier cross-sectional shape and channel depth, with air-foil-shaped pier proving to be the most effective in receiving flow-induced compressive forces.
