Abstract

This study explores how digital transformation influences the ESG performance of Chinese A-share listed companies from 2014 to 2022. It finds that digital transformation plays a crucial role in improving corporate ESG compliance, with positive effect even after addressing potential biases and conducting robustness checks. The analysis highlights that digital transformation boosts ESG performance primarily by fostering green innovation and increasing social responsibility within enterprises. Further analysis shows that the impact is especially significant in the manufacturing, high-polluting, and high-tech sectors. This research underscores the importance of digital transformation in enhancing ESG practices and supporting sustainable development in Chinese businesses.
