Abstract

To comprehensively understand the research status and development trends of library makerspaces abroad, and to provide practical references and actionable insights for the high-quality construction of library makerspaces in China, this article systematically reviews and analyzes relevant research literature on overseas library makerspaces published in recent years. The study finds that foreign scholars have conducted extensive and in-depth explorations in three core research dimensions. First, in terms of concept and significance, they have clarified the connotation of library makerspaces as "collaborative innovation platforms integrating knowledge services and hands-on creation" and emphasized their role in promoting user innovation literacy and expanding library service boundaries. Second, regarding makerspace types, they have categorized them into technology-oriented, art-integrated, and community-serviced types based on functional positioning, and summarized the matching construction standards for each type. Third, in makerspace management, they have focused on operational mechanisms such as volunteer team building, equipment maintenance systems, and user safety training, and put forward targeted optimization strategies. These research findings not only fill the gap in the theoretical system of library makerspaces but also provide direct reference value for optimizing the type layout of Chinese library makerspaces and enhancing their sustainable operation capabilities, thereby supporting the innovative development of China’s library service system.
