- Abstract
This paper focuses on the trend of decreasing marriage rate among young people in Huzhou, a representative city in the Yangtze River Delta region of China. Faced with the national trend of delaying marriage and non-marriage, this research adopts a mixed approach, qualitative analysis of official statistics and quantitative analysis of social media data, to explore the drivers and accelerators of this emerging trend and phenomenon. In this study, economic factors, unique socio-cultural factors, traditional, high divorce rate and other factors play an important role in the comprehensive study of marriage of the youth in Huzhou; these factors force to reframe marriage from an option rather than a necessity. The research concludes that youth non-marriage in Huzhou is not only an individual and personal choice but also a complex paradox, which offers us a multidimension perspective towards the modern marriage. From different perspectives of economy, culture, etc. the article tries to find a microcosm to explore the social transformation in urban China, modern Zhejiang province and Wu-Yue culture area.
