Abstract

The Vellar is a seasonal river and is one of the seventeen river basins of Tamil Nadu (110 13’ N, 790 47’ E). The river has a length of 150km. It originates on the southern slope of Kalvarayan hills in Salem Dist. and drains into Bay of Bengal. Rainfall increases towards the east and the lower Vellar sub-basin receives more rainfall compared with upper reach. There are 5 reservoirs in the basin. The river has a meandering tendency in the lower reach for a length of 30km resulting in heavy erosions of agriculture lands because of high discharge during north east monsoon. Initial field surveys were conducted for actual field information. Based on the field data and desk studies meandering tendency was identified. HECRAS-1D model run was performed with existing conditions and the existing issues were assessed. Based on the study, it was proposed to install series of repelling spurs. Mike 21 numerical model was adopted initially to finalize remedial measures. Based on the model, results two short spurs and strengthening of bund are proposed. Physical model studies were done to verify the effect of repelling spurs and the study indicates accretion in between the spurs. The project was completed in 2013 which includes river bank strengthening and spurs construction. Post monitoring of the project was also done with field measurements and satellite imageries. The improvement of agriculture along adjacent area and deposition of sediments along the bund was visible. The details of studies with post project observations are furnished.
