Abstract

The Meenachil river basin faces significant challenges due to rainfall, leading to issues such as soil erosion and flooding. Effective management of runoff is essential for improving watershed health. The main focus of this research is to evaluate and optimize BMPs for Meenachil basin using SWAT and GA, with the goal of reducing runoff and sediment yield in a cost-effective and sustainable manner. The SWAT was used for hydrological modelling, coupled with GA to identify the most cost-effective BMP scenarios. The model calibration and validation were conducted using SWAT-CUP with the SUFI-2 algorithm, with observed discharge data from 2001–2017. This ensured the model’s reliability. After the implementation of BMPs, results proved that the combined application of multiple BMPs outperformed individual practices in reducing runoff and sediment yield. The optimization process highlighted contour farming among the most effective and economical strategies. The findings support the adoption of targeted, cost-efficient practices to enhance water quality and preserve soil health.
