Abstract

Current research on cold patch asphalt mixtures primarily focuses on the development of cold-patch asphalt modifiers, such as SBS, SBR, and polyurethane-modified asphalt cold patch materials. Epoxy resin, a thermosetting polymer with excellent adhesion, corrosion resistance, and high strength, is widely used as a modifier to prepare epoxy asphalt cold patch materials. The reaction between epoxy resin and curing agents forms a three-dimensional network structure, which reduces the temperature sensitivity of asphalt and enhances its bond strength, tensile strength, and high-temperature stability. However, the polarity difference between epoxy resin and asphalt leads to poor compatibility, which often results in segregation during material preparation. Consequently, existing studies predominantly focus on waterborne epoxy resin/emulsified asphalt systems, while research on oil-based epoxy resin/diluted asphalt systems remains limited. Additionally, the brittleness of epoxy resin curing products, combined with the inherent cold brittleness of asphalt, leads to stress concentration and brittle fracture under low-temperature conditions and vehicle loads, limiting the engineering application of epoxy asphalt cold patch materials. This study aims to address the issues of poor compatibility and inadequate low-temperature stability in epoxy asphalt cold patch materials. Based on the oil-based epoxy resin/diluted asphalt system, we propose to develop two types of toughened epoxy asphalt cold patch materials with high strength and excellent low-temperature performance. The research outcomes are expected to reduce the cost of pothole maintenance, improve the durability of asphalt pavements, promote the application of epoxy resin in cold patch materials, and provide a scientific basis for the development and engineering application of epoxy asphalt cold patch materials.
