Abstract

Focusing on the dance work Chinese Mama, this paper examines the contradictory construction of character imagery. It analyzes the work across three dimensions: action, psychology, and personality, to investigate the underlying mechanisms of character creation in dance art. Methodologically, the study first dissects the contradictory presentations embodied in bodily movements and group choreography from the dimension of action. It then reveals the inner conflicts between consciousness and emotion, as well as cognition and motivation, from the psychological dimension. Finally, it examines the dialectical unity of identity and value beliefs from the personality dimension. Theoretically, this study employs dance theory to analyze the protagonist’s movements, integrating multidisciplinary perspectives from psychology, ethics, and personality theory. This approach establishes a three-dimensional analytical framework of “action-psychology-personality,” offering a novel theoretical lens for interpreting the contradictory construction of character imagery in dance.
