Abstract

This paper takes Michael Berry’s English translation of the novel To Live as the research object, based on the core proposition of Eco-translatology that “translation is the translator’s adaptive selection to the translational eco-environment.” It conducts a systematic analysis on how the translator coordinates linguistic, cultural, and communicative factors in the multi-dimensional dynamic eco-environment. The study finds that the translator's decision-making is not centered on formal equivalence but oriented by intelligibility and communicative effect in the target language eco-environment, achieving synergistic selection among linguistic structure reorganization, cultural concept adaptation, and pragmatic function reconstruction. This research provides a case for the discourse coordinate transformation and cultural negotiation experienced by Chinese literature when entering the English world, and also offers a theoretical reference for understanding the acceptance mechanism and cross-cultural communication pathways of Chinese literature in the English-speaking world.
