Abstract

African countries allocate a significant portion of their national budgets to public procurement, making it a critical driver for economic growth and the development of local construction industries. This study aims to assess research trends and strategies in public procurement that enhance the growth of Africa’s construction sector. A bibliometric and content analysis of 32 peer-reviewed articles published between 2010 and 2024 was conducted using the Scopus database, with VOSviewer employed to map knowledge structures and identify emerging themes. The findings reveal that publications have grown steadily since 2016, with South Africa and Nigeria emerging as dominant contributors, while Ghana records the highest citations despite weaker research networks. Key thematic areas include sustainability and technology-driven procurement, though most studies have not explicitly linked these strategies to local industry growth. The study contributes by highlighting the gaps in collaborative research across Africa and by emphasising the need to strengthen research networks. The practical implication is that policymakers and procurement actors should adopt inclusive, technology-orientated, and sustainable procurement strategies to build resilience and stimulate local construction sector growth.
