- Abstract
Historically, mending clothes was the surest way to ensure their longevity, resulting in sustainable consumption. However, overconsumption of clothes from fast fashion discourages mending clothes and results in unsustainable consumption, which is now found in landfills. Given that demographic characteristics influence clothing desires, use and consumption, this study aims to revive mending clothes by examining the demographic factors underlying intentions to mend clothes towards sustainable clothing consumption patterns. A cross-sectional survey was adopted, and data collected from 574 respondents were analysed using an Independent Samples T-Test. The results show a statistically significant difference between Gen Z and Gen Y’s cloth mending intention, with Gen Zs being more likely to mend clothes than Gen Ys. The results show that the difference between male and female cloth mending intention is statistically significant, with females more likely to mend clothes than men. Whilst extant literature has shown that demographic characteristics influence fashion consumption and behaviour, there is limited literature on adopting sustainable practices, such as mending clothes from a consumer demographic characteristics perspective. Hence, this study is among the first to examine clothes mending intention towards sustainable fashion consumption. The findings reveal significant demographic differences in mending clothes, underscoring the need to adopt a demographic-specific approach in encouraging people to adopt sustainable clothing practices, such as mending clothes.
