- Abstract
In response to the growing need for more engaging and effective antenatal education strategies, this study assessed the instructional impact of a digital interactive animation intervention compared to traditional verbal tuition among expectant mothers at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (GARH), Ghana. Drawing on a modified Uses and Gratification Theory (U>) framework, – motivation, cognitive load, perceived convenience, enjoyment, concentration and educational value were quantitatively examined. An experimental design was adopted with a control group (n = 30) and an intervention group (n = 30). Welch’s t-test revealed statistically significant differences in favour of the animation group across all constructs (p < .001), with large to extremely large effect sizes. ANCOVA further confirmed the robustness of these findings, identifying digital competence and age as significant covariates. The results highlight the pedagogical value of animation-based learning in maternal care, supporting its integration into antenatal education, especially within low-resource settings. Findings also underscore the need to consider learner background characteristics in the design and deployment of digital interventions.
