- Abstract
This study analyzes the economic structural transformation of Makassar City over the past three decades, focusing on the shifts from primary sectors, such as agriculture, to secondary and tertiary sectors, including manufacturing, construction, and services. Using Location Quotient (LQ), Shift Share analysis, and Klassen Typology, the research identifies key base sectors driving Makassar’s economic growth and examines the role of regional competitiveness in this transformation. The results show that Makassar’s economy has significantly shifted towards the secondary and tertiary sectors, with manufacturing, construction, and trade emerging as the leading contributors to the city’s GDP. The study also highlights the declining role of agriculture, reflecting the broader trend of urbanization and industrialization. Furthermore, the increasing importance of the services sector, particularly in education and healthcare, points to a growing shift in household consumption patterns. The findings suggest that policymakers should prioritize investment in infrastructure, services, and human capital to sustain Makassar’s economic momentum and foster long-term growth. This transformation aligns with economic development theories, indicating that Makassar is on a successful path toward a more diversified and sustainable economy.
