Abstract

Cooling systems for vegetables and fruit in tropical countries are essential for improving post-harvest quality. However, in Indonesia, these systems still pose a significant cost burden. Therefore, an efficient, low-cost, and environmentally friendly system is needed. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of a green cold storage system in improving cold storage operational efficiency. This research was conducted experimentally through a case study of a medium-temperature cold storage system that has implemented the environmentally friendly refrigerant R-404A. Data collection was carried out using a no-load procedure, then analyzed using statistical methods to obtain the Coefficient of Performance (COP), degree of superheat, degree of subcooling, and mass flow rate. The results show that a balance between system components is necessary for optimal performance. This balance can reduce the compression load and, if calculated correctly, has the potential to increase operational efficiency by up to 15%. This is very beneficial for reducing operational costs, so that this system can be used by farmers effectively and sustainably.
