Abstract

The utilization of coconut shell charcoal as a raw material for herbal toiletries holds great potential due to its environmentally friendly nature and economic value. However, the production process for good quality charcoal powder still faces challenges in terms of efficiency and consistency. This study aims to design, construct, and test the performance of a coconut shell charcoal powder production machine integrated with grinding, sieving, and heating systems, making it operable at the MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) scale. The method employed is a design-and-build approach using the ADDIE development model, which includes needs analysis, Detailed Engineering Design (DED), prototype development, implementation, and performance evaluation. Testing was conducted using 184 g of coconut shell charcoal as raw material with an operating time of 5 min. The results showed that grinding efficiency reached 89.67%, indicating optimal crushing performance. However, sieving efficiency was still low at 27.27%, due to the high amount of coarse particles that did not pass through the sieve. The overall efficiency of the machine was 24.46%, while the heating process could be improved by enhancing the thermal insulation of the storage chamber. This study concludes that the machine design performs well but requires optimization in grinding, sieving and heating stage to consistently produce charcoal powder that meets herbal toiletries standards.
