Abstract

The rising demand for sustainable and health-oriented food products has created new opportunities for rural agro-industries in Indonesia. This study explores the integration of photovoltaic (PV) technology and business model innovation in the palm sugar granules (gula semut) production process in Talaitad Utara Village, North Sulawesi. Through a qualitative-descriptive approach combining field observations, focus group discussions (FGDs), and prototype testing, the research demonstrates significant improvements in production efficiency, product consistency, and environmental impact. The application of PV-based heating systems led to a 20–30% reduction in cooking time, stabilized thermal control, and eliminated smoke pollution from firewood combustion. Concurrently, the implementation of the Business Model Canvas (BMC) framework enabled a structural transformation in the value chain, including diversification of marketing channels, cooperative formation, and digital marketing readiness. The findings indicate that combining renewable energy and business model transformation is a feasible and replicable solution to revitalize traditional agro-industries and align them with sustainability goals. This study not only validates the practical application of green technology in rural settings but also offers a foundation for future research in broader agricultural and entrepreneurial contexts.
