Abstract

The accelerating progression of global climate governance, coupled with the further advancement of China’s “dual-carbon” strategy, has led to the evolution of green finance into a pivotal policy instrument. The integration of environmental oversight and economic progress through this lens has consequently emerged as a key catalyst for promoting high-quality growth. Nevertheless, current research has not adequately investigated the micro-level mechanisms by which green finance fosters newly refined productivity, nor has it sufficiently underscored the moderating influence of enterprises’ own agency in the policy implementation process. This study employs a novel methodology, namely, a two-difference model (DID), to explore the impact of green finance on the development of enterprises’ new-quality productivity in the context of China’s prefecture-level cities between 2010 - 2023. The novelty of our approach lies in its integration of the managerial financial background into the analytical framework, thereby illuminating the moderating effect of the managerial background on the policy implementation. The findings indicate that the development of green finance can facilitate the enhancement of new-quality productivity among enterprises. It demonstrate that the development of green finance can significantly enhance enterprises’ level of new quality productivity; Moreover, the moderating effect analysis suggests that the financial background of enterprise management exerts a positive moderating influence on this relationship, further boosting the impact of green finance on the elevation of new quality productivity; The heterogeneity analysis demonstrates that the policy effect exhibits a spatial gradient consistent with the phenomenon of “stronger in the east and center than in the west, and lighter pollution is preferable to heavier pollution”. The results of the study provide theoretical basis and practical inspiration for the development of green finance to promote enterprises to accelerate the formation of new quality productivity and promote the development of high-quality economy.
