- Abstract
This writing aims to study Genesis 1:1 in more depth, specifically from the perspective of functional ontology. The perspective of functional ontology is a philosophical approach in exploring the understanding of the existence and function of entities in a system. This study investigates how the verse can be understood through the lens of functional ontology, which emphasizes the role and purpose of creation in cosmological and theological structures. Through the process of textual analysis and hermeneutic interpretation, it is found that Genesis 1:1 explains the purpose and function of creation itself. So it is not limited to the story of the beginning of creation and the material world. God as the creator not only acts as an entity that begins the existence of everything that exists but God also determines the function and purpose of the heavens and the earth. The text of Genesis 1:1 can be understood with an outer meaning through a functional ontology approach. The results of this study are to show that the functional ontology view provides deeper and more comprehensive knowledge about the narrative of creation. So this study makes an important contribution to theological and philosophical discussions about creation, by providing a new framework for studying and understanding the biblical text in the context of functional ontology.
