Abstract

The “Sao” tradition in the Rote indigenous community holds a deep sacred meaning and a vital part in forming the community’s moral values and cultural identity. This tradition symbolizes not only our marriage but also an oral tradition of spiritual dedication passed from generation to generation through memorization and collective memory. This is a study to consider the “Sao” tradition in Rote culture through Christian religious education. This research primarily aims to collect problems regarding the “Sao” traditional values to see the alignment of “Sao with Christian values, and what the implications of the two values are on Christian teachings done by the Rote indigenous community. Revered throughout Rote culture, “Sao” tradition means This study employs a qualitative ethnographic methodology. This study involved collecting data through in-depth interviews with community members, Christian religious leaders, and indigenous practitioners. Competing interests: The authors declare they have no competing interests. The result of this study logically contributes to the effectiveness of more inclusive and contextualized Christian religious education in the Rote indigenous people. Incorporating local customs into religious codes helps not only preserve a given culture but also boost the effectiveness of moral and spiritual education in the community. In addition, this study demonstrates the importance and necessity of working together with religious leaders, traditional elders, and Christian educators in developing a religious education process that is rooted in and recognizes the existing local cultural heritage. Timely and participatory integration is excellent for establishing communication between religion and tradition and for ensuring community self-identification and the harmonization of society into community.
