Abstract

The purpose of this article is to improve the general public’s understanding and way of thinking about the values that exist in Minangkabau culture and how these values correspond to Christian teachings that are generally understood and practiced. This article uses qualitative research with a literature study approach based on the management of data and information from relevant literature. The focus of this article is Kato nan Ampek which is the culture and ethics of communication in Minangkabau society. Kato nan Ampek teaches us how to speak to elders, young people, people of the same age, and people we respect. This article will look at and review how the meaning contained in language ethics in Minangkabau culture affects the general order of community life. The meaning of the values contained in the culture of communicating Kato nan Ampek has a meaning that resembles and is similar to the method of teaching Christian values. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to find out how the values contained in Kato nan Ampek in the view and perspective of Christian teaching values in community life. The results of this study show that the values contained in Kato nan Ampek have the same meaning in Christian teaching values, namely living the values of love, respect, and honor. In this paper we will dicover something new that has not yet been understood, namely that Minangkabau culture has the same teaching values as Christian values which teach about love, respect, politeness, and good communication in life.
