Abstract

The concept of diversity plays an important role in Indonesian society. Throughout history, people have naturally engaged with different religions. Being friendly is a fundamental human trait. Interreligious friendship is a long-standing practice within the community, characterized by genuine and selfless relationships that transcend any ulterior motives or personal gain. This research aims to find a public platform of interreligious friendship through the lens of the Batak Toba tradition. This research identifies, analyses, and documents recurring themes within the context using thematic analysis. In-depth interviews were conducted with informants living in the districts of North Tapanuli, Humbang Hasundutan and Toba. These included traditional leaders, members of cultural organisations and leaders Ugamo Parmalim. The results show that ‘hasortaon’, which embodies politeness, kindness, and consideration for others, serves as a basis for interreligious friendship based on the local wisdom of the Christian Batak community. In addition, “hasortaon” embodies an open-hearted approach to reconciling the tensions and conflicts that may arise in interfaith relationships, illustrating a willingness to embrace others.
