- Abstract
Green building rating schemes emphasize energy efficiency and resource management, but little is known about their contribution to occupant wellbeing in the Indian academic environments. This study proposes a convergent parallel mixed methods approach; through this framework the environmental parameters such as thermal comfort, IAQ, light, acoustics and spatial configuration can be objectively measured using calibrated and certified equipment following national and international standards. In parallel, post-occupancy surveys based on validated international toolkits can be conducted on occupants to measure satisfaction with the facilities, perceived comfort, and behavioral adaptation. With integration of objective and subjective data collection, the methodological approach provides a thorough evaluation of IEQ and reveals the performance gap between GRBS intent and real time user experience. This model facilitates interpretation of user centered performance anomalies and provides a repeatable, context sensitive measurement approach for higher education institutions. This approach draws attention to the importance of including user opinion for improving green building performance over time and calls for an appraisal of certification programs to better address well-being and to assist the decision-making process from user perspective.
