Abstract

Punjab, a state with a rich heritage of crafts exudes its prosperity through its multi coloured culture. The Paranda makes one such craft which exudes the culture, identity and true essence of the festive spirit of Punjab. The Paranda is a braided accessory for hair worn by the females particularly of Punjab for ages. The craft is a true symbol of the ethnic identity, feminine expression and the craftsmanship of the culture of Punjab. The Paranda has always been a significant accessory for the festive and wedding attire. The craft is facing decline in the recent decades due to several reasons like industrialization, mechanization of the craft, devaluation of the traditional craftsmanship, use of synthetic materials and disinterest of the youths. The review article provides an insight on the significance of Paranda craft as a cultural artifact. The paper also highlights the impact of decline of this historic craft on the artisan communities and indigenous knowledge systems. The study also aims at highlighting the key reasons for the decline of the craft and contributes to preservation of the craft. The study also discusses the revival strategies and methods to explore the potential for restoring the Paranda craft and upliftment of the artisans. This study also accentuates the intangible heritage of the Punjab among the local people along with the global craft platform.
