Abstract

Artistic practice and research have progressively merged in recent decades, leading to a strong interdisciplinary field that connects the realms of creation, critical examination, and academic exploration. This article investigates the dynamic relationship between art and research, analyzing how incorporating research methods into artistic practices not only enriches the creative process but also aids in producing new kinds of knowledge. By examining historical paths, changing theoretical models, and relevant case studies, the paper clarifies the interconnected relationship between creation and meaning, highlighting the link between the act of making and the process of contemplation. Special attention is given to the differences and similarities between practice-based and practice-led research models, highlighting how artists utilize research both as a methodological tool and as an integral part of their creative process. The paper also explores how these methods allow artists to thoughtfully reflect on their practices, situate their creations within larger cultural and intellectual discussions, and offer unique perspectives to both artistic and scholarly circles.

This paper contemplates the merging of artistic practice and scholarly research, which encourages a deeper, more intricate comprehension of art—not merely as a means of expression, but as a powerful tool for examining intricate societal, cultural, and philosophical questions. It highlights the transformative capacity of the artist-researcher as a person who both generates and evaluates, influencing modern discussions through a combined perspective of creativity and critique.
