Abstract

The fashion industry, one of the largest environmental issues across the globe, is developing solutions towards increasing sustainability. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming a major disruptor of the fashion industry and it provides an innovative technology approach that can optimize design, reduce waste, and create streamlined supply chains. This paper explores the significant impact of AI to support the development of sustainable fashion and how this new AI framework will fundamentally alter product development processes including textile design, material innovation, supply chain management and recycling processes. With a dedicated use of AI, fashion designers will be able to use generative design tools that can produce collections based on fabric usage, and lower the environmental impact of the design process. AI technologies can also increase transparency in supply chains, increase efficiencies in production and sourcing of fashion textiles and allow for recycling and remanufacturing of post-consumer fashion waste. While challenges such as technological limitations, resistance to change, and ethical concerns remain, AI holds significant potential to create a circular, environmentally-friendly fashion industry. This paper therefore presents a holistic review of AI in current integration, challenges and future opportunities, and highlights its disruptive opportunities to promote a more sustainable and ethical fashion market.
