Abstract

A Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) is an optical add-drop multiplexer that can remotely switch user’s traffic. This optical network considered input power for the project’s first stage by implementing a 4-channel Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) system. The resulting outputs were Q-factor, Bit Error Rate (BER), and output power. DWDM creates additional non-occupied channels which can carry information at once. It is essential to maximize the system performance since BER is distance-dependent. Long distances have a high Q-factor and low BER. A standard ROADM unit with four channels was implemented to add frequencies and drop channels on message signals for better system efficiency. The system adds a signal in the presence of a message signal and drops when the message signal is not present; this saves power consumption. The modifications lead to lower BER and better Q factor. In addition, the system was made more efficient with the introduction of adaptive modulation, which chooses the modulation technique based on the SNR values and distance. The adaptive modulation functionality enhances the concept of reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers.
