Abstract

The city of Tegal today is experiencing a degradation of its maritime identity, while Tome Pires notes that in the 17th century the city of Tegal became an important port in transit and export-import activities. Gradually, the forces of globalization have contributed to the erosion of Tegal City’s maritime identity, which has resulted in the loss of its unique characteristics as a maritime center on the north coast of Java. Despite the Tegal City government’s 1989 adoption of the BAHARI (bersih, aman, hijau, asri, rapi, and indah) jargon to revitalize its maritime identity, the city’s maritime cultural values still appear to be diminished. Therefore, this research aims to identify for the strength of maritime culture for the sustainable development of Tegal City. By using a historical approach, this research attempts to re-embroider the maritime identity of Tegal City using cultural threads. The results of this research show a comprehensive understanding of the facts that shape the maritime identity of Tegal City. By exploring maritime history through cultural history education, as well as preserving both tangible and intangible cultural heritage, Tegal City can build a strong and unique maritime identity as a bargaining power that differentiates it from other cities. The expected results of this research not only aim to inspire the involvement of the younger generation in preserving maritime culture but also strengthen cross-sector collaboration to maintain and advance the maritime identity of Tegal City in the present and future.
