Abstract

Modernization is a manifestation of modernity, which is a set of values that applies in a wider scope of space, time, and social groups or is universal. This characteristic of modernity is often contrasted with tradition, which refers to something that is passed down from one generation to the next. Because its applicability is limited to a particular group, tradition does not have the universal nature of modern values. Some argue that norms derived from tradition can be an obstacle to progress or the process of modernization.

Technological advances that are increasingly accessible make it faster for people to witness changes that occur continuously. These changes not only affect the appearance of the performing arts on stage, but also affect aspects of the content or structure of the performance, such as storyline patterns, wayang playing techniques, and the working system of instruments in karawitan. As a result, people’s interest in traditional performing arts that were previously a part of their lives has begun to wane. This is a cause for concern, especially since traditional processions such as ruwahan and nyadranan are actually full of moral values and can be a medium for instilling good teachings. However, in the view of local community leaders, the ruwahan and nyadranan processions are currently experiencing a drastic decline or even dying out. This phenomenon is one example of how tradition is increasingly marginalized by the influence of modernization. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the impact of modernization on the existence of the ruwahan and nyadranan traditions, identify the factors that cause the decline in community participation, and examine preservation efforts so that these traditions remain relevant in the modern era.
