Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive multimodal discourse analysis of female representations in Indonesian horror film posters produced between 2022 and 2023, currently available on Netflix and other streaming platforms. The study employs Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) as the primary methodology, anchored in Kress and Van Leeuwen’s Visual Grammar and Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics. Through this framework, the research explores how various multimodal features—such as visual imagery, colour schemes, typography, and layout—construct and perpetuate stereotypes of women in the horror genre. A total of 20 film posters were meticulously analyzed to identify recurring themes and patterns in the portrayal of female characters. The findings reveal that these posters often reinforce traditional gender stereotypes, depicting women as both victims and sinister figures, which align with broader cultural narratives surrounding femininity and fear. This analysis underscores the significant role of the horror genre in shaping and reflecting societal attitudes towards women, particularly in a genre that thrives on subverting the familiar. The paper contributes to the broader discourse on gender representation in media, offering insights into how horror film marketing in Indonesia utilizes multimodal resources to influence audience perceptions of women.
